>At the peak of its wartime activity in 1945, 7,000,000 volunteers and 39,000 paid staff provided service to the military. For the guys at Fowlmere, the Red Cross was personified by Mary Williams, Jeanne E. (nee Mulquin) Wood, Sarah Beardon, and Caroline E. Schultz. Postwar, Jeanne and Mary were active members of the 339th Fighter Group Reunion Association.
>Fortunately for us, Jeanne preserved her memories with photographs, descriptive paragraphs, and even paintings of her time at Fowlmere. Below are some of her memories....
> Jeanne's Red Cross Club provided donuts and coffee to hard working ground crews at all hours of the day and night, and the same pick-me-up to weary pilots just returned from battle. In addition, her Red Cross Chapter organized social events for the boys.
